Hunting making an appearance in 2019
29 August 2018
As the fly-fishing season is coming to an end, it is the beginning of the hunting season. This year we have a new addition in Hooké: we now have a hunting-inspired clothing line and are embarking on sharing our hunting expeditions. The combination of these two disciplines came instinctively for us since we have been fly fishing and hunting since day 1. Throughout our travels across the globe we have come to realize that many people practice hunting and fly fishing in the same way as we do. This is why we decided to bring to life hunting, we share the same passion and values for both sports. Hunting and fishing have been part of our history for thousands of years and we strongly believe the importance of sharing our vision to our growing audience and how we bring a new approach to age-old techniques and traditions.
François Emond will be the main host for this new hunting show. Geographer by trade, he has been a hunting adept for the last 20 years. Every Fall he goes out to the Île d’Orléans, not only to hunt but to observe the tides, wind and habits of local fauna. Wildfowl is without any doubt his favourite species. For Frank, the art of the hunt does not only consist of tracking the animal. Above all else, it’s a way to connect with the land, its topography and its climate. Respecting the resource and the ethics of hunting are core values for Frank.
François has already started filming with Hooké and here is the story of his first wild turkey hunt :
‘’A hazy April morning, before sunrise. Anthony and I head towards the field he scouted the day before, where he had been able to confirm the presence of at least 2 male turkeys and a few females. The morning should be profitable.
We’re walking along the trail and the closer we get to the cache, the more calls we hear from nearby turkeys.
As soon as the first rays of light come through, we see a Tom make his way towards us. Before reaching us he suddenly stops; a female turned out to be more convincing and drew him away.
All is not lost though, as only a few minutes later another mature male arrives. Hope returns. We try to remain still, tucked in the blind. The bird approaches us slowly, stops, calls. Anthony returns his calls, but the turkey seems to slow down and even head somewhere else! Once again, a female managed to pull the Tom out of our range.
This same scenario will happen two more times, with hope renewing after each new appearance. After a whole morning like this, we finally gave up, taking comfort in the fact that we had the incredible luck of seeing the mating rituals of 4 superb mature males and their respective females. An amazing show, but not quite the morning we were hoping for. But as we all know, that’s also part of hunting.”
During the shoot, Frank had the opportunity to try out our new Poncho Hoodie. The tough and extensible fabric passed the test; durable and comfortable, it’s heavy enough to be worn as a last layer, but not too thick to be used as an intermediate thermal layer. According to Frank, it’s a great all-around product: ‘’I find it quite comfortable and solid, a fabric tough enough for my lifestyle.’’
